Buying a battery – what you need to know

Batteries should last up to 3 years, so chances are, you are going to have to replace it at some point.

Here’s a quick battery 101 for you that will help you choose the right battery and get it lasting as long as possible.

Firstly – you must match your battery to your make and model of vehicle. This is where Probe’s handy online Battery Finder comes into play.

So, I’m looking for the right fit for this Landy and there we go – we need the 658P Xtreme Premium Battery.

This is one of the Probe range of batteries which you can spot a mile away. The red handle, this Magic Eye indicator which gives you an indication of the state of charge, the sleek colour-coded packaging.

The Xtreme is a high performance battery that offers increased grid strength and internal plate supports, making it vibration resistant, extremely durable and robust – perfect for our African conditions.

Henri, our Probe technician, is going to install it for me.

So what are you paying for in a good battery?

Warranty – Probe batteries have a 12, 24 or even 36 month warranty depending on the range Quality and plate construction – All batteries are not created equal and it’s a real case of you get what you pay for – whether it’s a lead-flooded battery, like this one, AGM technology with fibreglass plates or the deep cycle EFB type for StopStart vehicle technology.

Finally, the design of our lid types. Is it sealed – which makes it maintenance-free, or accessible, meaning you’ll have to add electrolyte. Either way, the Probe battery is totally maintenance free, so it uses less electrolyte and has a longer life. You can just fit and forget it.

If you have more accessories you may need a higher spec battery. For example, the OEM specced a 90AMP for this Landrover, but Probe also has an 100AMP to accommodate accessories like lights, sound systems, fridges or trackers. The next important thing is to make sure it’s installed correctly. To enhance battery life, the main thing is to make sure your terminals and bracket are securely fastened and clean.

In older models it’s straightforward to replace the battery, but in newer high-tech models with lots of electronics that are powered by the battery, you’ll need to have an alternative power source or this nifty Schumacher memory saver to keep those settings safe while your battery terminals are disconnected.

How to choose and use battery chargers

It’s good practice to charge a vehicle’s battery while it is being serviced, as well as keeping batteries in unused vehicles or on the shelf charged.

Don’t pick a cheap charger – as you can really mess up your battery.

Smart charging means that it’s regulated with multi-stage charging for added precision, safety and battery life – giving you the right voltage over the time period needed to avoid overcharging. For Henri, our service technician, the SCI90 is great as it also has a desulphation function with slow and fast charge capabilities – up to three times faster than a normal charger.

This SP range from Schumacher ticks all the boxes – right from SPI 1 to SPI 15 depending on the capacity you need and the type of batteries you need to charge. These are good allrounders and charge AGM, Standard, Gel Cell, Calcium, and Start/Stop batteries.

The tried and tested rule is to have a charger with an output of 10% of the capacity of the battery – for example, a 100 Amp battery should be charged with a 10 Amp charger. For a small to medium car – 6-10 amp will do it – but trucks would need 10 Amp plus like this one. With Schumacher, even the smallest batteries can be charged with the biggest charger, not necessarily the case with other brands. So go big and buy one charger for all your needs.

EFB Batteries for stop-start technology

Idling in gridlocked traffic is a huge waste of petrol, and money. I am fortunate to get to test drive many of the latest vehicles being released in the market. Very soon, almost all new cars will have environmentally-friendly stop-start technology. This brings down fuel consumption and harmful emissions by automatically stopping and starting the engine – reducing the time engines spend idling.
Fuel savings from stop-start technology can be as high as 12 percent; the longer you sit, the more you gain.

An enormous amount of power is needed to ignite the engine.
So, if you keep doing this over short bursts and in low-speed drives such as when you’re sitting in a traffic jam, you need a heavy-duty performer.

With the introduction of stop-start technology and advanced Engine Management Systems, Probe has launched Automotive AGM and Enhanced Flooded Batteries – or EFB batteries – that are designed to meet these demands.
Probe EFB batteries are an evolution of the lead-acid battery to deal with the extra power and thermal requirements in a stop-start environment.

This baby has an improved charge acceptance and is able to deliver a far greater number of cycles when operating in a reduced state of charge.
The EFB battery can provide about 85,000 engine starts compared to the standard 30,000 starts you’ll get from a lead-acid battery.

Using a standard battery instead of an EFB in a stop-start system can cause battery failure within 2 to 4 months, so make the right choice when you have to replace your battery. With Probe – you’re going to get high cycling performance, improved charge acceptance and a long service life.
