GIVING OPPORTUNITIES AND HOPE TO THE DEAF COMMUNITY

At Probe Corporation, we engage in the transformation of South Africa at every possible opportunity presented to us. One of our major initiatives is the training and development of our own employees and that of unemployed learners. But we are intent on taking this one step further:  the reality is that beyond our own employees are millions of others who don’t have opportunities to grow their skills and empower themselves economically.  This is especially true for disabled youth and adults.

In support of this, for the last 5 years, Probe Corporation has supported a specialised training provider for deaf youth.  The organization is known as eDeaf – Employ + Empower, and offers several training courses and learnership programs to “Empower Deaf communities for business”. The training courses and learnership programs offered by eDeaf provide practical tools and skills in order to enable the Deaf community to participate in employment and business opportunities.   Training and learnerships which eDeaf learners are placed on are related to IT, computer literacy certificates, and wholesale and retail certificates.

Did you know that the Deaf community is one of the most marginalised groups in South Africa?  This is because Deaf people cannot freely communicate with the hearing world, and are thus often regarded as incompetent, simple-minded or not fit for employment.  Probe Corporation believes that it is critical to change this perception.  To this end, we have contributed to the social and economic empowerment of the Deaf community by paying for non-Probe related training courses as well as bringing some learners into our own learnership programmes.  Our support amounts to approximately 7 unemployed eDeaf learners per annum.

At Probe, we continually strive to make a difference to the lives of our employees and the plight of the substantial number of historically disadvantaged learners, including the disabled.  We are proud to be associated with the incredible work being done by eDeaf – Employ + Empower.
