The much-anticipated Billfish 15000 tournament has just been held in Sodwana Bay from 13 to 17 November.  Probe, South Africa’s leading importer, wholesaler and distributor of batteries, starters and alternators as well top quality air compressor products and leading industrial lighting solutions, is one of the sponsors of this prestigious event.

Hosted by the Dorado Ski Boat Club, this is the biggest event of its kind in the world and attracts teams from across the globe to test their skills in the five-day tournament with fishing taking place from first light each day until 3pm.  Teams hailed from Finland, Wales, Italy, Australia, England, Hawaii, Zimbabwe, Azores, Namibia, Germany, Canada and Swaziland.

The tournament is a conservation-friendly tag-and-release competition fished on an open line class, with a 37 kg maximum line class.  In accordance with international angling rules, only two game fish may be weighed by the teams each day, and all caught billfish and kingfish are to be released following capture.   However, it is permissible to take ashore bycatch hooked during the tournament.  This fuels further tournament excitement in that the biggest daily bycatch weighed at the weigh-bridge receives a prize, as well as an overall prize awarded for the biggest bycatch of the tournament.

As the bycatch tournament sponsor, Probe awarded the biggest bycatch of each day with a Stanley Fatmax air compressor gift voucher to the value of R 4 500.00. The Stanley Fatmax is a superb product that forms part of Probe’s recently launched air compressor product line.

In addition to the daily prizes, Probe also presented the overall bycatch winner with a R12 500 gift voucher for one 2.5 KVA Invertor and three 12TE105 batteries.

The Billfish 15000 not only provides a high-octane fishing experience for anglers, but actively contributes towards research by assisting O.R.I in collecting all statistics of catches of game fish, T&R of every billfish that is released.  The tournament also provides a generous financial contribution towards Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife for conservation and development.

Probe’s Rick Rovelli said that the tournament is an obvious fit for the company and one that they like to support each year.  “This adrenaline-filled event is attended by a host of talented anglers who extremely serious about their sport.  When they’re out on the water, there’s no time to worry about the reliability of their boats.  Probe supplies a variety of batteries that are ideally suited to marine application, include starting batteries, multipurpose and deep cycle batteries.”
